Life's pace is so fast these days.
The general mindset is that taking a break is lazy. We should be busy. We shouldn’t have time for ourselves. So, what happens? We burn out. Finally, the mindset is starting to change. We are beginning to recognise that self-care makes you more energetic and therefore more effective with everything you do. Nothing good comes from avoiding things that make you feel physically and mentally well.
It is time we care for ourselves. There are many ways to do this that does not take up too much time. Neglecting your own wellbeing depletes your mental energy. Whereas when you ‘self-care’, you maintain a healthy relationship with yourself. It produces positive feelings, which improves overall wellbeing. Self-care benefits your family and friends too; it encourages them to follow your lead and take time for their needs.
Other benefits of self-care include:
Saying “no” to things that over-extend you gives you more time for things that matter. It helps to bring your goals into sharper focus and helps you to concentrate on what you’re doing so that you get more done.
Improved immune system.
Studies have shown that self-care activities help activate your parasympathetic nervous system. Your body is put into a restful, rejuvenating mode, helping it to strengthen the immune system. This means fewer colds, flu and stomach bugs.
Nurturing the growth of self-confidence.
Being kind to yourself and carving out time to meet your personal needs sends a positive message to your subconscious. In other words, you treat yourself like you matter and recognise your value. The result is quietening that critical inner voice.
Get to know yourself.
Self-care can involve allowing yourself to revel in things you enjoy. This way you identify what your hobbies are - what makes you passionate and inspired. Over-working or letting the care of others take over your life can leave you little time to figure out what you really love. Self-care could result in a career change or picking up a hobby you didn't even know you liked.
The Results are Better for Others
Too often we feel guilty and selfish for being kind to ourselves. When you take a step back, you realise that self-care makes you a stronger person and the necessary resources to look after others.
Self-care involves calming your mind, engaging with your emotions and getting in touch with your values and what matters to you.
Look after that body
Physical self-care can be as simple as going for a 20-minute walk a day which is vital for your health but also helps you let off steam. Physically moving, even functional movement like gardening or walking the dog along with prime nutrition is food for the soul.
Social self-care is essential because connecting with other people is necessary for happiness. People are social creatures and need connectedness. Knowing when your time is valuable is excellent but also reaching out and allowing yourself to be vulnerable with the right tribe is what really helps us sparkle.
